Invisso Conferences, The Central & Eastern European Forum returned to Vienna this 14th and 15th, of January for its 30th anniversary, bringing together top-level investors, business leaders, policymakers, financiers and regulators.

Banka Kombëtare Tregtare, sponsored and organized for the fifth time, a special roundtable dedicated to Albania in this Forum, an event hosted by Mr. Seyhan Pencabligil, BKT Chief Executive Officer and Board Member, with the participation of Mr. Adrian Kamenica, General Director of the Department of Policy and EU Integration, Ms. Elira Kokona, Executive Director of the Albanian Investment Corporation (AIC) and Mr. Ridgers Mema, Head of Business Development, Kastrati Group.

In his opening speech, Mr. Pencabligil introduced this year’s theme, "Albania 2030 in the EU," following the EU’s decision to open the first chapter of membership talks. This milestone comes after a positive initial assessment of Albania’s progress in crucial areas such as political and economic reforms, as well as the strengthening of the rule of law. He emphasized that these steps mark a significant achievement for Albania, reflecting the country’s commitment to aligning with EU standards.

Mr. Kamenica highlighted Albania’s strong determination to complete EU accession negotiations by 2027, a goal supported by 95% of Albanians, who maintain a remarkably positive view of the EU—an extraordinary sentiment in the region. He emphasized that this ambition underscores Albania’s commitment to meeting EU standards and ensuring the country’s long-term economic growth. Accelerated integration, as seen through initiatives like SEPA and the Growth Plan, plays a crucial role in achieving this objective. The Growth Plan, he noted, is not just a financial support mechanism but also a strategic political effort by EU member states to foster the convergence of the Western Balkans and reaffirm their shared interest in the region's future. Despite potential shifts in political climates, the European integration process remains a unifying and vital priority, aligning the interests of all parties involved.

Ms. Kokona addressed the audience by outlining the accomplishments and key priorities of AIC, emphasizing the strategic investments in the real estate sector. She underscored the importance of developing public property and creating opportunities that drive urban and economic growth. Additionally, she introduced initiatives aimed at fostering innovation and enhancing Albania's business climate, positioning AIC as a crucial driver of economic development. In her speech, Ms. Kokona also extended a direct invitation to investors to explore the opportunities available through AIC’s ambitious projects, including the "Selman Stërmasi" Stadium, Lift and Void Tower, National Library, and Hospitality Albania. She highlighted these initiatives as unique opportunities for both local and international investors, stressing their potential to significantly impact Albania's economic and cultural transformation.

Mr. Mema shared with the panel the history of success of TIA driven by a shared vision for development of the shareholder, the investors among whom BKT and the government. ‘’Since the Kastrati group took over Tirana International Airport (TIA), the transformation has been remarkable. Despite taking charge during the pandemic, when the aviation industry was in turmoil, the group’s belief in the potential of Albania and TIA kept them motivated. Within three years, considering that the two mid years were still affected by Covid 19 virus, TIA saw a dramatic increase in passenger traffic, growing from 3.3 million in 2019 to 10.7 million in 2024, and projections show more than 12.5 million for year 2025. TIA is actively engaged in reducing its carbon footprint and it has made significant strides in carbon management and reduction. Investments in infrastructure, breaking the monopoly, and attracting major low-cost carriers like Wizz Air and Ryanair were key to this success. TIA now offers 109 destinations, including 22 European hubs, which from there you connect all over the world, contributing significantly to tourism and economic growth. Looking ahead, TIA is expanding further, with plans for a major terminal expansion and the launch of direct flights to the U.S. in 2026. This growth solidifies TIA’s position as the fastest-growing airport in Europe and a source of national pride.’’
