Diphtheria Outbreak in Kent Center of Migrants
British media give the alarm that the immigration reception center in Kent, catastrophically overcrowded, as the prestigious British The Guardian describes the situation there, is filled with people who are waiting in inhumane conditions for the examination of their asylum requests.
Finally, it seems to be facing the big problem of infectious diseases. Local health experts warn about the outbreak of diphtheria in this center, where there are also many Albanians who have arrived in England by raft.
According to The Guardian, in fact, in October of this year, at the migrant center in Kent, 80% of asylum seekers were from Albania. Dr Simon Clarke, professor of biology at the University of Reading, told The Sun that the infection, which affects the skin, nose and throat, is likely to spread to the local population.
"There will probably be enough immunity across the UK to prevent large-scale transmission, but I wouldn't be surprised if we had smaller, localized outbreaks. It is important to note that while diphtheria potentially poses a serious threat to public health, it remains treatable with antibiotics if diagnosed early," he says.
So far, 50 migrants - including some children - who have arrived in the UK this year have been diagnosed with diphtheria, according to Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick. Two people have been hospitalized and another has died, the agency said on Sunday. Asylum seekers with symptoms of diphtheria will be placed in isolation, Jenrick added, according to which migrants showing signs of the disease will be separated from others at the Manston center in Kent.
