Lawyer Maks Haxhia met with his client Ergys Agasi in detention on Thursday, one day after his arrest by Albania’s Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPAK).

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Haxhia said the defense’s immediate priority is to gain access to the investigation file, arguing that it is necessary to review the evidence before presenting its legal claims.

Haxhia said Agasi denies any criminal responsibility and maintains that he had no involvement with public finances or public tenders.

“My client Agasi claims that he is completely outside any legal liability,” Haxhia told reporters, adding that the media had “exaggerated the problem.”

Asked why Agasi had not surrendered earlier if he maintains his innocence, Haxhia criticized the approach to pre-trial arrests in Albania.

The lawyer argued that authorities should first conduct investigations, establish evidence and then seek an appropriate security measure, rather than arresting suspects before the evidence is fully assessed.

SPAK arrested Agasi on August 26 in Durrës. He is being investigated in connection with allegations including participation in a structured criminal group, illegal competition through violence, unlawful deprivation of liberty, corruption and money laundering.
