Extension of Tirana-Durrës Highway Advancing
The expansion of the Tirana-Durrës highway with two lanes on each side, where one will serve for emergencies, will turn it from a category “B” highway to a category “A” highway.
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, shared on Tuesday information from the construction site, announcing that the works have advanced.
“On the Tirana-Durrës highway, we are advancing the works daily to finalize this important project,” she said. The addition of four lanes allows for speeds of up to 130 km and brings it within the parameters of all new highways being built.
The first segment where interventions are being made is 6 km, from the Kamza turn to the Rinas overpass. In addition to the two-lane expansion, the entire road will be rebuilt with road and asphalt layers, because this road has now reached the end of its life cycle, said Balluku.
It was planned for a traffic flow of 40 thousand vehicles per 24 hours, while now at the peak of the flow, there are 94 thousand vehicles. The rehabilitation and expansion of the entire road cost Euro 250 million.
The expansion of the Tirana-Durres highway is expected to significantly ease the traffic between the capital and the coastal city, especially during the summer season.
