Former KLA Leader Released by Hague Court

The Specialized Chambers in The Hague on December 14 modified the sentence against the former vice chairman of the Organization of Veterans of the War of the Kosovo Liberation Army (OVL-UÇK), Nasim Haradinaj.

The modification enables Haradinaj to be released from prison, under certain conditions, the Specialized Chambers in The Hague have announced.

In May 2022, Haradinaj, together with the then chairman of the OVL-UÇK, Hysni Gucati, were sentenced to four and a half years in prison on charges of obstruction of justice.

Then, the Appeal reduced their sentences for three months. Gucati's sentence was modified on October 17, which allowed him to be released from prison, with conditions.

Haradinaj and Gucati were arrested on September 5, 2020, to be sent to The Hague.

According to the announcement, the head of the Specialized Chambers, Ekaterina Trendafilova, concluded that "Haradinaj had the opportunity to reflect on his actions during his detention in the detention facility."

"Based on the report, he had respected the rules of the detention facility during the last few months," the announcement states.

Trendafilova also "considered the repentance of Mr. Haradinaj and his promise that he would not be involved in other actions that could be characterized as criminal offenses against the administration of justice and that he will fulfil all the conditions set for his release," the announcement continues.

If "Haradinaj does not fulfil any of the conditions defined in the decision, then the decision will be annulled", the announcement states.
