Germany, Austria Call for Urgent Start of EU Accession Talks with Albania

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his Austrian counterpart Karl Nehamer have stated that it is urgent to open negotiations with the Western Balkan countries in the face of the Russian threat, especially since the invasion of Ukraine. According to the two chancellors, the effects of the occupation of Ukraine could extend to the Balkans.

For this reason, they say it is important to find allies for a co-operative European policy around the world - but also in Europe.

"The fact that the Western Balkans are part of Europe must now be put into practice," Nehammer said.

"We are asked to make sure that we strengthen and support the Balkan region. It also includes a clear European perspective for the countries of the Western Balkans," Scholz said.

They demand that the opening of negotiations and the membership of Albania and Northern Macedonia begin as soon as possible. "Any further delay leaves the Western Balkans vulnerable and open to the influence of third parties," he said.

According to Austrian Chancellor Nehammer, such influence is expected to be exercised by Russia and China. Therefore, according to him, it is "geostrategic interest to move quickly and offer the people of these countries fruitful perspectives."

As the war in Ukraine continues to escalate, EU membership negotiations are crucial for Ukraine, but also for neighbouring regions that may be affected by the occupation. The strategy that Austria and Germany aim to pursue is to mobilize for wider approval of the countries' membership in the EU. "From my point of view, it also seems like the current situation in particular has massively increased the willingness to work together here," Scholz said.
