Albania and Germany have signed three cooperation agreements in the energy and energy efficiency sector, with a total value of approximately €114 million, including €90 million in loans and €24 million in grants.

Following the signing ceremony, Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Enea Karakaçi and the German Ambassador to Tirana, Karl Bergner, said the projects, supported by the German government and the German Development Bank (KfW), are of strategic importance for modernizing Albania's energy system and improving services for citizens.

“The first agreement concerns energy efficiency in the electricity transmission system. Through this project, the entire transmission network will be digitized, enabling the automation of processes related to the interconnection of substations and the operation of the power system,” Karakaçi said.

A second agreement provides for the rehabilitation of the Vau i Dejës Hydropower Plant, one of the country's most important publicly owned energy assets. According to the minister, the project builds on the long-standing cooperation between the German government and KfW in modernizing the hydropower facility.

The third agreement focuses on the energy-efficient rehabilitation of the dormitory buildings in Student City. The project will be financed through a €24 million grant from the German government via KfW and aims to improve students' living conditions while reducing energy consumption.

“These are projects that serve the public interest—for students, for better living conditions and a better learning environment, while also promoting energy savings, since all the facilities will be upgraded to meet energy efficiency standards,” Karakaçi said.

The minister thanked the German government and KfW for their continued cooperation and support for projects of public interest in Albania.

For his part, Ambassador Karl Bergner reaffirmed the German government's commitment to supporting investments that have a positive impact on Albania's economy. He thanked the Albanian government for its cooperation and emphasized the importance of joint investments that contribute to the country's development and modernization.
