Lower Roaming Tariffs with EU, Next Step; Balluku
The reduction of roaming tariffs between the EU and the Western Balkans was the focus of discussions organized between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, which leads the process, and the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority, as a regulatory institution and mobile operators operating in Albania.
Also participating, Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku stressed that it is very important the commitment of mobile phone operators to become part of the successful realization of this very important process.
"Reducing these tariffs will have a direct impact on citizens and is also the next step in the Digital Agenda of the Western Balkans after the successful implementation of the Regional Roaming Agreement," Minister Balluku stressed.
The countries of the Western Balkans abolished roaming fees for calls within the region on July 1. The prices for calls, SMS messages and data traffic are identical in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.
In April 2019, the countries of the Western Balkans signed an agreement to abolish roaming charges in July 2021. Under the agreement, a transition period started on July 1, 2019, when the roaming fees for calls between Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, and North Macedonia were lowered by 27%, while for Albania the reduction was 85%.
