President Biden Congratulates Kosovo on Independence Day

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, said that his country remains an unwavering partner of Kosovo, as he congratulated the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani on the 14th anniversary of independence -17 February 2008.

In the letter sent to Osmani, President Biden said that Washington continues to support the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, which according to him, should end with mutual recognition.

"We are pleased that Kosovo continues to build and strengthen its positive relations with neighboring countries, and we will continue to support your efforts towards a comprehensive normalization agreement with Serbia, focused on mutual recognition," Biden said in a letter to Osman.

The United States and the European Union have called on Kosovo and Serbia to return to the dialogue mediated by the European bloc and to implement the agreements reached in this process, which began in 2011. The last high-level political meeting between Kosovo and Serbia took place in July 2021.

While congratulating the people of Kosovo on the anniversary of independence, President Biden said Kosovo in the 14 years of independence has made progress and has "transformed from a fragile democracy into a state ready to share its experiences with the world."

Biden said that last year Kosovo demonstrated leadership on the international stage. "From providing safe housing for the vulnerable to strengthening global security and supporting the US military in Kuwait, the people of Kosovo have shown to the world their bravery and generosity," Biden said.

Kosovo is temporarily sheltering Afghans who fled Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of the country in August last year. They, once they go through the verification process, will be settled in the US or any other third country.
