Prime Minister Condemns Opposition Protest Violence, Calls for Justice
Prime Minister Edi Rama has strongly condemned the violence that erupted during Tuesday’s opposition protest in Tirana, calling for justice for injured police officers and punishment for those responsible for throwing what he described as potentially lethal explosive devices.
In a post on social media platform X, Rama shared images of improvised explosive devices allegedly used during the Democratic Party-led protest on February 10. The demonstration, the party’s third nationwide rally in recent weeks, escalated into clashes outside the Prime Minister’s Office and later near Parliament.
“These are the improvised bombs with which police officers were attacked, burned and injured last night,” Rama wrote, accusing the Democratic Party of orchestrating violence. He described the pyrotechnic devices as “weapons with lethal capacity” and urged the justice system to act decisively.
“I hope justice delivers justice for the injured police officers and punishes without hesitation the carriers of these weapons with lethal capacity,” Rama said.
The prime minister also launched a sharp political attack against the opposition, calling it “the only political party in the democratic world that exercises violence” and comparing it to the party of former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe. He further criticized the opposition’s leadership, referring to what he described as an “over eighty-year-old” figure leading the movement.
