Tirana International Airport, which is currency the largest in the region in terms of passenger numbers, is also being transformed into one of the most interesting in Europe, thanks to the innovative project of the famous Italian architect, Marco Casamonti.

A large and beautiful pedestrian square at the entrance and exit of the airport, along with a new underground parking lot for over 1,000 vehicles, will be available to travelers and tourists, who have made the airport, the champion of the region, with the highest growth among European airports, in the years after the pandemic.

Prime Minister Edi Rama was at the airport on Friday, where he met with Italian architect Marco Casamonti and inspected the work so far.

“This is just the beginning, and it will be extended for 500 meters to the tower. We will eliminate all the parking lots behind, and it will go another 500 meters further with this coverage. Now we will have to finish with the windows and the lighting. I have also sent you a video, and at night it is all lit up. We will use this (the external facade) to write and to show views of Tirana. Now all that is missing is the red windows, and this square will be the red Albanian flag with a length of half a kilometer, with granite and marble, big, with a moving eagle,” Casamonti explained as he gave details about the large underground parking lot.

“Below, there is a two-story parking lot with a length of almost 1 km, and it goes directly into the terminal. You park inside and go directly into the terminal. The parking lot has 1000 spaces. All the cars will go downstairs, and here it will be pedestrian only,” he said.

Afterwards, the architect and the working group explained some of the features that the square will have, the architecture of which will be combined with national elements.

“The square will be only red and black, the largest Albanian flag built with pixels. On the inside, there will be large and small objects, while on the outside, it will be a jewel. This will be a covered square. I want to build the most beautiful airport in Europe,” said architect Casamonti, while stating that the parking lot will also be covered in the same way, creating a unified construction.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Rama praised the work done and said that the airport will be among the most beautiful in Europe. “Unprecedented. It will be the most beautiful in Europe, but it will also gain a lot of terminal space,” said the Prime Minister.
