The Tirana City Council has asked Albania’s Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPAK) and the General Directorate of Prisons to allow Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj to participate in the council’s upcoming meeting on September 29.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. in the Tirana City Council chamber.

In its request to the authorities, the council said Veliaj should be allowed to attend the meeting in person, provided that the restrictive measures currently in place allow for his physical participation.

If an in-person appearance is not possible, the council has requested that Veliaj be allowed to participate via videoconference or another approved form of communication.

The request comes as the council is set to discuss several issues at the September 29 meeting, including a draft law concerning the administrative-territorial division of local government units, as well as matters related to the administration of the Municipality of Tirana.

The City Council has asked SPAK and the General Directorate of Prisons to inform it in writing of their decision. It also said it was prepared to cooperate on any security, protocol or logistical arrangements required to facilitate Veliaj’s participation.

The request was initially raised by City Council member Halit Valteri.
