Wildfire Above Thirrë-Kalimash Tunnel, Kosovo to Help Albania

Rruna Peak in Kukës has been engulfed by fire and this Monday afternoon, the flames are still raging out of control, especially in the part above the Kalimash tunnel, where intervention is difficult.

Latest update on the situation has revealed that the flames, aided by the wind, endanger a neighborhood in the village of Shëmri, although measures have been taken to evacuate residents along with livestock.

Meanwhile, assistance has been requested from Kosovo and the arrival of about 100 members of the Armed Forces and fire support are expected.

However, intervention from the ground seems difficult, because while the fire at the top of Rruna in Kukës continues to be still out of control.

Even today, the helicopter has intervened again to make it possible to bring the flames under control. The fire in the direction of the place called Laku i Thive is active. Even in the direction above the Kalimashi Tunnel, despite all the work done, it has not been possible to isolate and bring the flames under control.

The direction of the fire on the “Qafa e Kumbullës” is towards the Surroj village, Trull Administrative Unit, while the fire of Majes se Rrunes (Lak I Thive) is going to the village Shemri, Malzi Administrative Unit of Kukës municipality.

Considering the high risk to inhabited areas, 12 firefighters, 5 forest workers, 20 community forces, firefighters and civil emergency forces of the Municipality of Kukës were engaged in extinguishing the fire.
