70,000 New Words to Be Added to Albanian Language Dictionary

The dictionary of the Albanian language will be enriched with 70,000 words not previously included in the dictionary published in 1980.

If 40,000 words were included in the dictionary 43 years ago, the dictionary expected to be published in 2024 is expected to include 110,000 words.

Academics, well-known linguists from all Albanian-speaking regions, including the universities of the country and Prishtina, were involved in the drafting of this dictionary.

Ali Jashari, PhD professor at the University of Korça, part of the working group of the great dictionary of the Albanian language, has informed that this dictionary will help academics, lecturers, translators, students, journalists and all those who will use Albanian language.

"The dictionary itself is wealth and the dictionary with this number of words, meanings and others is a tool that will serve everyone for the enrichment of the language. The users of this dictionary are many, starting with scientists who deal with the drafting of dictionaries, lexicographers, translators, lecturers, students, schoolchildren, those who deal with the Albanian language in schools, those who draft school textbooks, journalists of all types of media, written and electronic, will have a powerful tool in hand to enrich the Albanian language and keep it as it is, beautiful and powerful, that meets all needs," said Jashari.

According to the professor, this dictionary has been a necessity because of the 43-year gap.

"The large-type dictionary was a necessity after a very long lexicographical tradition that in the history of lexicography dates from Frank Bardhi's dictionary in 1635 to the dictionary of 1980. This void that may appear from 1980 to 2023, not that it is not dictionaries have been published, cause they have been published, enriched with new words, many publications have been made that served as a basis for the compilation of this great dictionary", Jashari emphasized.

"The dictionary has 110 thousand words without counting the meanings, there are about 11,500 phraseological units and many other discourse units", said the professor.

Professor Dr. Ali Jashari made all these known during a meeting he had in the auditoriums of the "Fan Noli" University of Korça on the days dedicated to the Spelling Congress.
