10-fold Funds for Social Housing Program
The Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation, Blendi Gonxhja, announced that the funds for the social housing program will be increased 10-fold. At the conference held on Tuesday, he said that there will be more funds for municipalities that do not have the means.
During the conference on the Social Housing Program, it was said that Albania has one of the highest rates of home ownership in Europe. According to the 2023 Census data, 82.5% of Albanian families live in homes they own and only 8.8% live in rented homes. The remaining part lives free of charge in homes owned by their relatives.
As a result, throughout the transition period, housing policy in Albania has generally been oriented towards the people in need.
The Economy Minister Blendi Gonxhja highlighted the new Social Housing Policy, where the private sector transfers 3% of the construction area or the cash equivalent to municipalities for social housing. Thanks to this policy, a public stock of social housing of 117,823 m2 has been created near the municipalities and a fund of over 35 million Euros has been accumulated.
Since the adoption of the 2018 law, a total of 22,840 families or 82 thousand citizens have benefited from social housing programs.
Minister Gonxhja said that for 2025, following the Minister of Economy’s call for investments, applications have been received from 43 municipalities with a total of 55 housing projects.
Also, for 2025, the Ministry of Economy, Culture and Innovation opened a call for 530 new quotas to help 530 families or young people who work with dedication in the public administration, the application which will be open for 30 days.
Speaking about the future of social housing in the country, Minister Gonxha said that by 2030, about 50 thousand families will be supported by a Euro 300 million program for the housing package for families, students, and immigrants.
