Albania has begun implementing a new project aimed at strengthening security in schools through the use of intelligent camera systems, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced.

According to Rama, 20 schools in the capital, Tirana, have already been equipped with the new technology. The cameras are intended to provide an additional security tool for school administrators, security personnel and parents.

The initiative follows a tragic incident at a school in Tirana that, according to Rama, highlighted limitations in the ability of existing surveillance systems to provide a clear understanding of what was happening in real time.

“At that time, I made a commitment: We would bring Albania to the highest level of technology to strengthen security in schools like never before,” Rama said.

He said that commitment was now beginning to become a reality, with the first 20 schools in Tirana equipped with intelligent cameras.

Unlike conventional surveillance cameras, the new systems are designed not only to record activity but also to detect and issue real-time alerts to school administrators, security personnel and the State Police, allowing them to better assess situations and respond more quickly, Rama said.

“These 20 schools are only the vanguard of the process,” Rama said, adding that the government plans to extend the technology to schools across the country.

“The commitment made after that tragedy will become a reality, school by school, with technology serving people and the safety of children above everything else,” he said.

Rama also visited Partizani High School in Tirana, one of the 20 schools where the intelligent camera system has been installed.
