Albania, North Macedonia Sign Border Agreement to Streamline Crossings

Albania and North Macedonia on Saturday signed an agreement to simplify border procedures by introducing a "One Stop" system at two border crossing points, aiming to speed up the movement of people and goods between the neighboring countries.

Under the agreement, travellers will undergo a single joint border control instead of separate checks by each country's authorities.

The system will be introduced later this month at the Qafe Thane border crossing and expanded to the Blate crossing next month, the two interior ministries said.

The agreement was signed in the town of Dibër by Albania's Interior Minister Besfort Lamallari and North Macedonia's Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski.

Albanian authorities said around 4,600 people cross through the Blate border point each day, while about 300,000 vehicles have used the crossing during the first five months of the year, driven by increased traffic following the opening of the Arbër Road linking Tirana with northeastern Albania.

Officials said the new arrangement is expected to reduce waiting times and facilitate cross-border travel and trade between the two Balkan countries.
