A protest movement in Albania entered its 86th consecutive day on Monday, with tensions reportedly escalating among protesters and divisions emerging within the group coordinating the demonstrations.

Activist Baki Goxhaj, who gained public attention after being detained by Israeli authorities while aboard the Global Sumud vessel traveling toward Gaza, has publicly clashed with members of the protest’s Coordinating Group.

In a social media statement, Goxhaj accused Coordinating Group member Ilir Dedaj of disrespecting the Albanian national flag, alleging that it had been used as a tool to silence or censor people with whom he personally disagreed.

Goxhaj said he had participated in the protests from their first day and had also been a member of the Coordinating Group before being removed without, he claims, receiving an explanation.

The activist further accused members of the group of insulting and humiliating him and of betraying his trust.

“Our relationship, both personal and with the Coordinating Group, has changed irreversibly,” Goxhaj wrote, adding that he had been insulted, belittled and betrayed by members of the group.

His statement comes as tensions inside the protest movement appear to be becoming increasingly public, raising questions about the unity and future direction of the demonstrations.

The allegations made by Goxhaj are his own and have not been independently verified. It was not immediately clear whether Dedaj or other members of the Coordinating Group had issued a response to the accusations.
