Albania Set to Approve Resolution Declaring Iran a State Sponsor of Terrorism

The Albanian Parliament is expected to approve a resolution declaring the Islamic Republic of Iran a state sponsor of terrorism. The draft cites international evidence of Iran’s support for armed non-state groups and destabilizing activities in the Middle East.

The resolution also highlights cyberattacks on Albania, including a recent assault on parliamentary digital infrastructure by a group linked to Iran, and recalls a major 2022 cyberattack targeting state institutions.

The draft calls on the Albanian government to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and Hezbollah as terrorist entities, aligning Albania with the U.S., Germany, the Netherlands, and several EU countries in condemning Iranian-sponsored terrorism.

The move follows years of strained Albania-Iran relations, partly due to Albania hosting thousands of MEK opposition members with U.S. support.
