Albanian Diaspora Expands Protests Against Zvërnec Project Across Europe and the US

Protests opposing the controversial Zvërnec development project and the Albanian government have expanded beyond Albania’s borders, with demonstrations taking place in several European cities and across the United States.

Hundreds of Albanians gathered on Saturday in Florence, Italy, carrying national flags and banners while calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the cancellation of projects they claim threaten Albania’s national heritage and natural resources. Demonstrators demanded greater transparency, government accountability, and stronger protection of environmentally sensitive and protected areas.

Similar rallies were held in Berlin, where participants waved Albanian flags, displayed protest signs, and sang the national anthem in a show of solidarity. A day earlier, Albanian protesters in Munich gathered under the slogan “The Homeland Is Not for Sale,” urging greater civic mobilization against the Zvërnec project.

The movement has also gained support across the Atlantic. In Washington, D.C., members of the Albanian diaspora demonstrated outside the Embassy of Albania, carrying red-and-black national flags and banners expressing opposition to the project. Comparable protests have also been reported in London, Vienna, and Milan.

The demonstrations reflect growing international engagement by the Albanian diaspora, which has joined calls made by activists and citizens in Tirana for the protection of national assets, increased public oversight of development projects, and greater government accountability.
