Suspect Arrested in Albania After Portuguese Tourist, 20, Is Killed in Ksamil

Albanian police say they have arrested the suspected killer of a 20-year-old Portuguese national who was killed early Tuesday morning in Ksamil, in the southern city of Sarandë.

Authorities identified the victim as Luis Miguel Varela Mendes. Police said the arrest followed a rapid investigation carried out in cooperation with prosecutors and several regional police departments.

The suspected gunman, 29-year-old Sokrat Lipan, also known as Sokrat Vata, was captured Tuesday morning in Levan, Fier, after police found him hiding in the trunk of a vehicle, according to authorities.

Police said Lipan was being transported toward Tirana in the vehicle, which was driven by 31-year-old Ezgi Perlak, a Turkish national. Another Turkish citizen, 38-year-old Nuh Mahmutoglu, was also inside the vehicle. Authorities said the two knew the suspect and had hidden him in the car in an attempt to help him leave the area.

As part of the investigation, police said 41 people were brought in for questioning at the Sarandë Police Station.

Authorities said 10 people were arrested following the initial investigative actions. In addition to Lipan, they identified those arrested as Ezgi Perlak, Nuh Mahmutoglu, Serxhi Selimi, 24; Ervis Bunci, 24; Ildi Cekani, 21; Murat Zhabina, 27; Miosid Matushaj, 24; Luciano Seferi, 44; and Romeo Shehu, 35; and Kristi Koshi, 29.

Police said the Albanian nationals arrested are residents of various cities and regions across the country, while Perlak and Mahmutoglu are Turkish citizens.

Authorities also declared 29-year-old David Heurteven and 36-year-old Bekim Bulica, both residents of Tirana, wanted in connection with the investigation.

The arrests come as police and prosecutors continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing and determine the roles of all those allegedly involved.

The investigation remains ongoing.
