Large Wildfire Erupts in Albania’s Polis Mountain Forest

A large wildfire has engulfed parts of the forested area of Mount Polis, in the Polis Administrative Unit of the Municipality of Librazhd, in central Albania.

According to local residents, the situation is alarming, with the flames reportedly spreading across several hectares of forest. High temperatures and dry conditions are contributing to the rapid spread of the fire.

The affected forest area has been subject to logging activities in recent years under permits granted to private companies. Dry vegetation and forest debris left behind following these interventions are reportedly making efforts to contain the flames more difficult.

Firefighters and forestry service personnel are currently on the ground, working to isolate the active fire fronts and prevent the blaze from spreading further.

The response has been hampered by the steep, mountainous terrain, which limits access for firefighting vehicles and makes it difficult for crews to reach some of the affected areas.

Authorities are also investigating suspicions that the fire may have been deliberately started.

The situation remains under monitoring, with the immediate priority being to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the forest massif. Authorities are expected to determine the exact area affected by the blaze once containment operations are completed.
