The head of the criminal investigations unit in the southern Albanian city of Saranda was assaulted early Sunday while attempting to intervene in a fight at a local bar, according to preliminary information.

The incident reportedly took place at Orange bar, where several people were allegedly being assaulted by the venue’s security guards.

According to the initial account, Mateo Bakalli, head of Saranda’s criminal investigations unit, intervened after identifying himself as a police officer. He was then allegedly punched by individuals involved in the confrontation, suffering injuries to his face and body.

Police subsequently escorted approximately 15 people to the local police station for questioning as investigators worked to establish the full sequence of events and determine the role of each person involved.

Authorities are expected to make arrests in connection with the incident as the investigation continues.

Police are working to clarify the circumstances surrounding the assault and determine responsibility for the violence.
