Basha Unveils Three Proposals in Meeting with Tirana Youngsters
The former chairman of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, made the first proposals after returning to the political scene in a meeting with young people this Wednesday afternoon.
Basha said that Albania needs open lists, vetting for politicians and limitation of mandates, no more than two.
"Open lists across the country, I know that not everyone wants this... There is no other way for the voice of every citizen to be heard and the vote to determine the true representatives. It is time to start a reality, to impose on the old politics that will take every decision-making into its own hands. 100% open listings. I have two other proposals.
The vetting of politicians is the second proposal. Investigation of personal and family assets, same criteria used for prosecutors and judges. Third, the solution that the US has given to corruption is the limitation of no more than two mandates. The time has come for Albania to curb sick egos", said Basha.
He said that this can be done with a referendum asking the citizens to make important decisions regarding the political developments in the country.
"Let's no longer trust people but the rules. I want you to believe that I am serious about this platform to give you control over trust for politicians. Through the open list you have that control. In order to make this a reality, we have to set constitutional mechanisms in motion. The opportunity to make a constitutional change a reality belongs not only to the parliament but also to the citizens. They have made it difficult but not impossible.
50,000 citizens can initiate a popular referendum to ask citizens about open lists, vetting of politicians, term limits, yes or no. These are issues for which Albanians do not have to wait and divide into left and right. If 700,000 people who do not come out to vote, my invitation is to join together, share every factor to start a process of transformation of the political system. I don't know any other way. I can also come with promises of revolution, but these promises start out sensational and end up extinguished. We have the opportunity to start another path together", he said.
