BoA-Financed Public Debt Drops to Lowest Level

The public debt financed by the Bank of Albania has dropped to the lowest level in the last six years. According to information from the Bank of Albania, at the end of the third quarter of 2025, the value of the treasury bills portfolio held by this institution was worth Lek 59.57 billion.

Statistics also show a continuous decline in the share of domestic public debt in Lek, financed by the Central Bank. The latest data from the Ministry of Finance show that at the end of the third quarter of 2025, the Bank of Albania held only 7.25% of the domestic debt.

The share of public debt in Lek financed by the Bank of Albania has been declining over the past decades. In the early 2000s, after the cessation of direct financing of public debt by the Central Bank, it held about 25% of it.

The Bank of Albania participates in the primary market of government securities only in auctions of short-term instruments (treasury bills) and without submitting competitive bids, so as not to directly influence the price of borrowing.
