Commissioner Varhelyi Responds to Democrats on Durres Port Project
Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement of the European Union (EU), Oliver Varhelyi, has responded with a letter to the democrat MP, Enkelejd Alibeaj, regarding the Port of Durres and Durres Marina Bay and Yacht that will be built by the company "Symphonie real" with a value of 2 billion euros.
Várhelyi has affirmed the concern that the European Commission has regarding the implementation of the SAA and European Union standards.
The letter emphasized that "when it comes to interstate agreements with third countries, the position of the EU is clear and has always been so, including in the last Stabilization and Association Council that was held in March 2021 between Albania and the EU."
Furthermore, the letter emphasizes that all procurements or concessions, including agreements between states or third parties, must be based on the principles of transparency, competition, equal treatment and non-discrimination.
Furthermore, Commissioner Várhelyi argues that the Commission is in constant consultation with the Albanian government.
He pointed out that the European Commission has canceled the remaining grant from WBIF (International Funds for the Western Balkans) in relation to the Port of Durrës.
On his part, Alibeaj addressed an open letter to the expansion commissioner Várhelyi regarding the lack of competition for the construction of the so-called "Durrës Marina Yacht Project".
