Police in the southern coastal city of Saranda have arrested an elderly married couple accused of stabbing a minor during an altercation, authorities said on Tuesday.

The suspects, identified by police as a 79-year-old man and his 73-year-old wife, were taken into custody after allegedly injuring a child on the arm with a knife for what police described as “trivial motives.”

According to local media reports, the incident stemmed from claims that the 6-year-old child had verbally insulted other children belonging to the couple’s family.

Police also said criminal proceedings have been launched against the couple’s 39-year-old son, who is accused of threatening the minor with a knife during the same incident.

Authorities added that the couple failed to comply with police orders during the arrest. The case materials have been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for further legal action.
