Socialist lawmaker Ulsi Manja, chairman of Albania’s Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs and Public Administration, has called on the Prosecutor’s Office in Dibër to launch an urgent and comprehensive investigation into the causes of the fires that have been burning for days in the Lurë area.

Manja said more than 200 personnel, including firefighters, municipal workers, Civil Emergency authorities and 51 members of the Albanian Armed Forces, are currently involved in efforts to contain the fires. Two aircraft are also supporting the operation.

While emergency crews continue to battle the flames, Manja said the prosecution should show the same level of urgency in determining how the fires started and identifying those responsible.

He called for a swift, thorough and objective investigation, arguing that authorities should examine each fire outbreak and pursue the individuals who may have deliberately started the fires.

“Lura is burning. The Prosecutor’s Office of Dibër must wake up,” Manja said in a strongly worded public statement.

The lawmaker also criticized what he described as an excessive focus on potentially negligent forestry officials, saying that investigating administrative responsibility alone would not be enough if the fires were deliberately set.

According to Manja, the authorities must identify the suspected arsonists and bring them before justice.

He further warned that if concerns over delays in the investigation are not addressed, he would seek the intervention of Albania’s High Inspectorate of Justice to examine the conduct of the prosecutor handling the case.

“No one is above responsibility,” Manja said, while praising firefighters and the Armed Forces for their ongoing efforts and calling for full institutional support for the police investigation.

The call comes as firefighting operations continue in Lurë, one of the areas affected by the recent wave of wildfires across Albania.
