Albania’s Police Oversight Agency has initiated criminal proceedings against four police officers over allegations that they failed to prevent the construction of a five-story building without a permit in the southern coastal city of Himara.

The officers are being investigated for alleged “abuse of office,” according to authorities.

The four officers have been identified as Emiljano Prenga, head of the Crimes Unit in Volum at the Divjaka Police Station; Klodian Petani, a crime investigation specialist at the Vlora Police Station; Ferit Merkaj, head of the Traffic Section at the Vlora Local Police Directorate; and Redin Çaushaj, a police patrol officer assigned to the Himara Police Station.

Authorities said Merkaj and Çaushaj have been declared wanted after police officers failed to find them at their homes. Despite being notified, the two have not yet reported to the relevant authorities.

Procedures are also underway to declare Prenga and Petani wanted, according to the Police Oversight Agency.

The investigation centers on allegations that the officers, in the course of their duties, allowed or failed to intervene over the construction of the five-story building, which authorities say was built without the required permit.

The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against the officers have not been proven in court.
