The government decided on Wednesday to reactivate the Fuel Price Transparency Board, as prices have remained above the level of Lek 222 (Euro 2.43) per liter for more than two weeks.

The Minister of Economy and Innovation, Delina Ibrahimaj, emphasized that this step is being taken in implementation of a prior normative act.

According to her, whenever the fuel price exceeds the 220-lek threshold, a procedure to reduce excise duty is triggered to lower the price for citizens.

The Minister explained that the only legal way to set this relief mechanism in motion was precisely by re-establishing the Transparency Board.

"Given that the price has remained at the level of Lek 222 per liter for over two weeks, and given that we previously adopted a decision via a normative act - stipulating that whenever the price exceeds Lek 220, we would activate an excise reduction mechanism to lower fuel prices - the only way to trigger this mechanism was to re-establish the Transparency Board," she said.

Ibrahimaj added, "We will begin continuously monitoring fuel prices in compliance with the relevant legislation regarding price margins."

Meanwhile, due to rising fuel prices, the state collected Euro 18 million in additional revenue between March and July, according to data processed by Monitor.
