Heavy Raining Causes Floods in Northern Albania

After two days with temperatures above the average for the month of December and sunny weather, the rains have started again, causing problems in northern Albania.

Heavy rains during the night and in the morning, but also keeping open the discharge tunnel of the Vau i Deja hydropower plant, have expanded the surface of the flooded lands in the administrative unit Ana Mali and in Dajc.

Civil emergencies have revealed that Obot Road is passable only by elevated vehicles and Oblica 1 and Oblica 2 waterworks are out of order, as about 3 hectares of land are under water.

Following weather improved around noon, the discharges at the Vaut de Deja hydropower plant were stopped.

Until 12:00 on Saturday, 900 cubic meters of water per second were discharged. There are currently no downloads from this download port. Discharges have been interrupted due to the side flows that have decreased compared to Friday night and Saturday morning.

As a result of the intense rain, the underpass in Fushë-Mamurras was blocked for about an hour during the morning. Flood damage has also been caused to some apartments in the Kurbin area. In Lezha, 500 hectares of flooded land in the Baldren area are under water.

Flows in the Mat River increased, but there was no flooding. There was a power outage for several hours in the municipality of Mirdita. The Kukës-Shishtavec road was blocked for several hours by falling stones.

The deterioration of the weather has left the city and several villages of Librazhd without electricity. The heavy rains have increased the flow in the Shkumbin river, causing flooding of the lands along the coast.

Strong wind with a speed of 60 km/h has caused the power of the sea in Vlora to go up to 6 knots.

Sailing in Vlora continues to remain suspended since the 14th, while the situation is expected to improve starting from the afternoon of this Saturday. The suspension is mainly for small vessels and fishing vessels, while the Vlora Brindisi ferry has continued normally.

Prime Minister Edi Rama guaranteed continuous monitoring of the situation created by the rains.

In order to prevent accidents, the State Police appealed to citizens to be careful and respect road signs and not to use mobile phones while driving.
