Holding of Elections in North Kosovo to Be Decided within Two Days

President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, said on Thursday that within two or three days everything will be clarified regarding the local government elections in the northern municipalities of the country inhabited by Serb majority, set to be held on December 18.

Their holding has been called into question after the incidents of the last few days, after which the organizations that observe the electoral processes in Kosovo, say that holding the elections in the current conditions seems impossible.

President Osmani said that she is holding meetings with the security institutions in the country and that she is waiting for their assessment of the situation, based on which the Central Election Commission can ask the president to postpone the elections.

"If such a request comes, after the assessment of the security institutions is sent to the CEC, as president, of course, I will make my assessment and share it with the political parties, but there must also be consensus, not complete unanimity as it is not required, but consensus. If there is consensus from the overwhelming majority of political parties, then this will be a joint decision," she said.

Authorities in Kosovo described the incidents as attacks organized by criminal gangs operating in the north of the country with the support of Serbia. While Serbian officials accused the authorities in Pristina of what they said was the continuation of terror against Serbs.
