Italian MEP joins anti-government protest in Albania, backs environmental causes

Italian member of the European Parliament Ilaria Salis joined an anti-government protest in Albania's capital on Saturday, expressing support for demonstrators calling for Prime Minister Edi Rama's resignation and urging the protection of the country's natural heritage.

Addressing the rally in central Tirana, Salis said Albania's natural assets, including Sazan Island and the Narta Lagoon, should be protected from commercial development. She criticized what she described as a model based on corruption, privilege and the interests of powerful elites, adding that such challenges extended beyond Albania.

"Albania is not for sale and Europe is not for sale," Salis told the crowd.

The demonstration was the latest in a series of opposition-backed protests against Rama's government. Protest organizers have accused the government of corruption and mismanagement, allegations the government has repeatedly denied.

Participants welcomed Salis's presence, describing it as a sign of international support for their campaign.
