Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani Dissolves Parliament, Calls Snap Elections
Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani announced Friday that she has dissolved parliament, sending the country to early elections after lawmakers failed to elect a new president before the constitutional deadline.
Osmani said the move was a constitutional obligation after the Assembly failed to choose a successor ahead of the March 5 deadline, which falls 30 days before the end of her mandate on April 4.
“It is a great misfortune that deputies did not choose the interest of Kosovo,” Osmani said, adding that the failed attempts to elect a president were “well calculated.”
The vote in parliament collapsed due to a lack of quorum. The ruling party Vetëvendosje had nominated Glauk Konjufca and Fatmire Kollçaku-Mullhaxha as candidates.
Meanwhile, Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu said she had asked the Constitutional Court to assess the constitutionality of the presidential election procedure and to temporarily suspend the constitutional deadlines until a ruling is issued.
Under Kosovo law, a president must be elected by a two-thirds majority in the 120-seat Assembly.
