Kurbin Lawyers, Citizens Protest against New Court Map
Lawyers and citizens gathered on Wednesday in protest in front of Kurbin court against the new court map.
They have demanded that the Kurbin district court, which has a population of about 90,000, not be closed.
Part of the protest are also the Members of Parliament of the Democratic Party (PD): Kastriot Piroli and Elda Hoti.
A placard placed on the court railings says: “Boycott against the removal of the Kurbin Court. Residents protect the institutions of your city. 90,000 people cannot be left without a court".
Nevertheless, this is the second week of protest by lawyers who have decided to boycott all court hearings.
On Monday, lawyers' Chamber in Elbasan and Fier decided not to continue the boycott of court hearings, which was undertaken in sign of protest against the new court map.
On a media release, the head of Elbasan's Chamber of Lawyers, Demir Çiftja said that after a meeting, the lawyers of his city decided not to continue the boycotts and to start regular court proceedings as of today.
"Elbasan Chamber of Lawyers from today continues the proceedings regularly, because on Friday, the 17th, in a meeting in the National Chamber of Advocates, we discussed extensively the situation regarding the court proceedings and decided to end the boycott. Today we are waiting for an interpellation of the Head of the Chamber of Advocates, Maks Haxhia in the Law Commission.
Depending on the situations that will arise at that meeting and regarding the decision of the council of ministers on the new judicial map, we will maintain our position. We continue to follow the line of the National Chamber of Lawyers", said Demir Çiftja.
On his part, the Head of Fier Chamber of Lawyers said that he was in favor of ending the boycott of court hearings.
However, the new court map has brought debates, as it is said that this map penalizes citizens and lawyers, as there will be only 13 courts of first instance, 2 administrative courts and 1 appellate court for the whole country.
This was the final proposal of the High Judicial Council for the new judicial map in the country after months of consultations with stakeholders.
The only difference from the previous proposal is that a court of first instance has been added in Saranda, which was removed with the previous proposal.
