Kurti Says Kosovo Could Elect New President Tonight, Calls on Opposition to End Parliamentary Deadlock

Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that Kosovo could elect a new president as early as tonight, urging opposition parties to help break the ongoing parliamentary deadlock and ensure the formation of state institutions.

Speaking on the political impasse, Kurti said that the ruling Vetevendosje Movement has made multiple offers to opposition parties, but all proposals have been rejected so far. He emphasized that responsibility for constituting institutions does not rest solely with the election winner, but also with the opposition.

“We have made a number of proposals to the opposition, but none have been successful, and none are the fault of Vetevendosje,” Kurti said, adding that Kosovo risks continued institutional paralysis if consensus is not reached.

Kurti also addressed questions regarding LDK’s proposed list of signatures, saying he had been in contact with candidate Hatixhe Hoxha, who reportedly agreed to withdraw her candidacy if the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) provides 15 supporting signatures for any candidate of its choice. He added that Vetevendosje would then contribute an additional 15 signatures to help move the process forward.

The prime minister highlighted that a potential candidate, Feride Rushiti, had sufficient votes but lacked quorum in parliament, which has stalled the vote. He criticized the absence of lawmakers from several parties, including the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), LDK, Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), and the Serb List, saying their absence is preventing progress.

Kurti insisted that agreement could still be reached, saying he remains open to solutions that would allow the election of a new president immediately and end the institutional crisis.
