Laç’s Quake-Affected Complain for Quality of Reconstructions

Residents of a block of flats damaged by the earthquake of November 26, 2019 in Laç have rasied doubts about the quality of works for the reconstruction of their houses.

They rose in protest, claiming that the works that have started are not being carried out properly.

"This has ended like a wall, we ask specialists to see it so that people can get inside", said a resident.

The four palaces, adjacent to each other, have suffered damage that is still visible. Residents demand that their reconstruction project be made transparent, as they say they have no security to live there.

"They did not open the foundations exactly, the project is to demolish all the balconies, they left the foundations without inserting the iron. Make the palace according to the state project or stop the works. We have no security at all to live with our families there.

We ask as soon as possible for the engineers to come and give us an explanation. How can the work start without first submitting the project and posting it on the construction site. This is unacceptable and we are totally against it", said another resident.

Another resident said they would not allow the works to continue unless the project was made public.

"We have been waiting for this day for two years, but we do not know what is happening here. We are not against the works, but we demand that the project be made transparent, because as you know, the palace has been damaged from the inside and outside.

There have been serious injuries and we have no security at all to live there. The structure is not being strengthened at all and this is unacceptable", said another citizen.

Meanwhile, they say that they have raised the concern in the Municipality of Kurbin, but have not received a response.

"We have gone several times and complained to the Municipality of Kurbin, but the mayor does not put water on the fire for this work. It is their duty to explain to the residents, our lives are in danger.

I do not understand why they leave us at the mercy of fate, while they have a duty to give us answers. We hope for a quick reaction, or vice versa, we will not allow the firm to continue the works, as we are dealing with our lives.

How can we be sure to enter the house without knowing if the work is being done properly. We also ask that the apartments inside be repaired according to the degree of damage", proclaimed another person.

On his part, when contacted regarding this issue, the director of Urban Planning in the Municipality of Kurbin, Benard Pali, refuted the claims of the residents.

He said that the buildings damaged by the earthquake are being reconstructed within all technical parameters, providing guarantees for the lives of the residents.

Meanwhile, in this block of buildings there are 48 families who have been living on rented dwellings for over 2 years.

The Municipality of Kurbin was one of the areas most affected by the earthquake of November 26, 2019 and so far the reconstruction of only 520 apartments has been completed, with funding from the Turkish government.
