Massive Albanian Student Protest in Skopje Demands Right to Take Exams in Native Language
Skopje witnessed a large-scale protest by Albanian students from the Faculty of Law in North Macedonia, advocating for the implementation of their legal right to take graduation exams in their native language. For approximately two hours, thousands of students marched through the city’s main boulevards, calling for equality in a right that, according to them, exists in legislation but is not enforced in practice.
Organized near the Ministry of Justice, the students set up a podium to voice their dissatisfaction with governmental institutions and demanded political accountability, including the resignation of top officials from relevant institutions. The protest was marked by high participation and national symbolism, with banners and red-and-black flags underscoring the significance of the Albanian language for their identity and professional future.
The core issue stems from a concrete challenge: students studying in Albanian are required to take final exams in Macedonian, a practice they view as discriminatory and a barrier to equal career development. Authorities have yet to respond to the demonstrations or address the students’ demands.
