Parliament Votes Law Forcing Medicine Students to Stay in Albania for Up to Five Years

Parliament of Albania approved in the early hours of Friday morning with 71 votes in favor, 23 against and no abstentions the bill for medical students.

Medical students will sign an agreement that they will work in Albania for 5 years after graduation.

This initiative of the government to curb the flight of students from their country, brought discontent among the future doctors, who accused the government of taking them back to the time of communism.

On the other hand, the Ministers of Education and Health, Kushi and Manastirliu emphasized several times that in such cases, when there is a lack of human resources, the state takes measures, therefore the law is not only not unconstitutional but is necessary.

Minister of Education, Evis Kushi, underlined that if the law was not approved in the last plenary session, it would be too late.

On the other hand, the opposition also made an attempt to introduce the Medical students into the Parliament, as they requested.

Furthermore, Kushi mentioned the low cost compared to the expenses that Albanian citizens pay through taxes for medical students, which according to her would not be fair to be rewarded with a lack of doctors and nurses.
