Parliament Convenes Under Heightened Security after Violent Protest
Parliament convened in a plenary session on Monday under heightened security, with the entire perimeter of the parliamentary building secured by metal barricades following violent clashes during last week's protest.
Lawmakers from the ruling Socialist Party entered the Parliament through a side entrance near the Academy of Sciences, while the main entrance remained blocked by metal fencing surrounding the building.
The increased security measures come after confrontations between protesters and police during Thursday's parliamentary session. Demonstrators threw eggs at lawmakers, prompting police to detain several individuals. Some protesters also breached the metal barriers and attempted to enter the Parliament building, leading officers to deploy pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
According to authorities, 20 people were detained following the unrest. The clashes left nine police officers injured, while five protesters also sustained injuries.
Security forces remain deployed around the Parliament as lawmakers continue the plenary session.
