Police arrested 12 people and launched criminal proceedings against another 15 following an unauthorised demonstration in central Tirana on September 14.

Police said the group gathered at Skanderbeg Square at around 7:30 a.m. before marching toward Durrës Street, where protesters stopped near a high school and allegedly called on students to boycott classes and join the demonstration.

Authorities said several participants refused police orders to leave the school’s security perimeter and clear the sidewalk, with some allegedly using force against officers during their detention.

The 12 arrested protesters range in age from 19 to 63, police said. The other 15 people are being investigated while at liberty.

The case has been referred to prosecutors in Tirana over allegations including organising and participating in an illegal gathering, resisting police officers, disobeying police orders, disturbing public order and inciting minors to commit a criminal offence.

Police said further procedural actions will be carried out by prosecutors and the competent court.
