Rama Defends Parliament’s Role as Debate Continues Over Prosecutorial Requests
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said Friday that recent public statements regarding an ongoing investigation have been misinterpreted, insisting that authorities should continue their work while respecting institutional roles.
Speaking during a press conference, Rama said he interprets the statements “in the proper way,” stressing that they call for the continuation of investigations and the broader fight against corruption.
“There have been debates, but the statements do not say what some commentators claim,” Rama said, adding that the key message is the necessity to continue investigations and strengthen anti-corruption efforts.
The prime minister also underlined that Parliament of Albania has the right to assess requests coming from prosecutors rather than automatically approving them.
“Parliament is not the notary of the prosecution,” Rama said, arguing that lawmakers are entitled to examine the merits of any request presented to them.
According to Rama, there is currently no formal corruption charge, although investigations may continue.
He also declined to comment on the absence of two members of parliament during the relevant proceedings, saying that explanations should come from the head of the parliamentary group rather than from him.
