Rama: Sazan Island Remains Public Property Amid Ongoing Investment Talks

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has stated that Sazan Island remains and will continue to remain public property, rejecting claims that the government is negotiating its sale to foreign investors.

Rama said discussions regarding a potential development project on the island have been ongoing for approximately three years, but no final agreement has yet been reached. He emphasized that investors have not requested to purchase the island and that, even if such a request were made, the sale of Sazan has never been considered an option by the government.

According to the prime minister, the negotiations focus instead on a joint venture between the investor and the Republic of Albania, with the island remaining fully under state ownership.

“Sazan is public land. We have been negotiating for three years and still do not have an agreement, because talks are ongoing,” Rama said. “They have not asked to buy the island, and even if they did, it has never crossed our minds to sell it.”

He added that any development would be structured as a shared investment, with ownership of constructed assets defined within the agreement framework. The Albanian Investment Corporation is reportedly leading the negotiations on behalf of the state.

“The island belongs to Albanians and to Albania,” Rama said, reiterating that the state would benefit from any eventual project.

Rama also noted that no finalized design or publicly released plan currently exists for the proposed development on the island.
