Saranda Prosecutors Secure Prison Detention for Six Accused of Assaulting Police Crime Chief
Six people have been remanded in custody after allegedly assaulting the head of the Crime Unit at the Saranda Police Station during a fight at a nightclub, prosecutors said.
The incident took place in the early hours of August 16, when police officer Mateo Bakalli intervened to break up a confrontation involving security guards at the Orange nightclub in Saranda and several other individuals.
According to the Saranda Prosecutor’s Office, Bakalli attempted to intervene after security personnel were allegedly assaulting several people. The officer identified himself as the head of the Crime Unit at the Saranda Police Station, but was nevertheless struck by members of the security staff.
The six suspects — identified by prosecutors by their initials as A.K., B.S., E.N., F.H., I.Ç. and M.K. — are accused of “assault because of duty,” committed in cooperation, under Articles 237/3 and 25 of Albania’s Criminal Code.
The investigation was launched under criminal proceeding No. 594, dated August 17, 2026.
On August 19, the First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction in Saranda approved the prosecution’s request to impose the security measure of “arrest in prison” on all six defendants, pursuant to Article 238 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The prosecution said the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
