Serbian Ex-Paramilitary to Face Justice for Sexually Abusing Albanian Man during Kosovo War

Kosovo's Special Prosecutor's Office has filed an indictment in absentia against the defendant with Serbian citizenship, with the initials G.P., for the criminal offense of sexually abusing an Albanian man, during the last war in Kosovo.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, with this action, the accused has committed the criminal offense, "war crimes against the civilian population".

Furthermore, the prosecution pointed out that the trial will be held in absentia, as it failed to ensure the physical presence of the accused in the courtroom.

"The defendant, as a member of the reserve police forces of Serbia, in complicity with other persons, contrary to the rules of international humanitarian law, with the use of physical violence and other inhuman actions, committed sexual violence against a male of Albanian nationality", underlined the Prosecution.

In the war fought in Kosovo in 1998/99, more than 13,000 civilians were killed and thousands more were made to disappear.

Over 1,600 people are still missing - most of them Albanians. However, the exact number of victims of sexual violence during the war is not known.

According to a report by the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention, this figure reaches up to 20.000.

Kosovo declared its independence in 2008 and is recognized by more than 100 countries of the world, which Serbia does not recognize and in the Constitution continues to consider the state as part of its territory.
