Seven Albanian Senior Officials Declared Non-Grata in Recent Years
Among the names of Albanians who were banned from entering the US this Monday and whose property was sanctioned, are Aqif Rakipi and Ylli Ndoqi. But these are not the only Albanians on the US blacklist.
-On May 19, 2021, former Prime Minister Sali Berisha was declared non-grata by the US along with his family. According to the DOS, the former Albanian prime minister has used his power for profits and to enrich his political allies and family members. Consequently, Berisha, his wife, Liri Berisha, his son, Shkelzen Berisha, and his daughter, Argita Berisha Malltezi, were barred from entering the United States.
-The US State Department would declare "non-grata" on February 14, 2018, the former Albanian Prosecutor General Adriatik Llalla due to his involvement in corruption. The DOS decision stated: “In addition to Mr. Llalla, the Secretary is publicly declaring non-grata the wife of Mr. Llalla, Ardjana Llalla, his daughter, Eni Llalla and his other child, a non-American citizen ".
-A few weeks later, on April 16, 2018, DOS banned ex-MP Tom Doshi, his wife, and his children from entering the United States with the same motivation. "In addition to the designation non-grata of Mr. Doshi, the Department is publicly declaring non-grata the wife of Mr. Doshi, Xhovana Doshi, his adult daughter, Briana Doshi, his adult son, James Doshi and his minor children," the decision said.
-On July 30, 2019, DOS, decided to declare as an unwanted person, refusing entry to the US to the then Mayor of Durres Vangjush Dako and his family. The reason was again the involvement of this senior official in corruption. "The Secretary of State is publicly declaring non-grata the Mayor of the Albanian Municipality of Durrës, Vangjush Dako, under Section 7031 (c) of the State Department Act, Foreign Operations and Separate Programs of FY 2019, due to his involvement in significant corruption."
