Tirana Police Report High Crime Detection Rate, Major Drug and Weapons Seizures
Police in Albania's capital have reported a series of major law enforcement successes, including large-scale drug and weapons seizures, arrests linked to financial crime, and the resolution of several high-profile criminal cases.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Tirana Police Director Oliger Torba presented the force's results for May and the first two weeks of June, revealing that authorities recorded 1,436 criminal offenses during May and solved more than 92% of them. Investigators identified 1,376 suspected offenders, with 247 individuals arrested or detained.
According to police, 58 operations were carried out targeting drug trafficking, illegal weapons possession, gambling activities, prostitution networks, unauthorized call centers, and crimes against persons and property.
Among the most significant actions were four phases of Operation "Zones," which resulted in the seizure of more than 2.7 kilograms of cocaine and heroin, and Operation "Network," during which officers confiscated 17 firearms, military-grade ammunition, six hand grenades, and approximately one kilogram of explosive material.
Authorities also highlighted the successful investigation of five major criminal incidents, including the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old, a homicide in Kamza, the kidnapping of a 34-year-old man, the shooting of a police officer, and the armed robbery of a jewelry store.
In a separate financial crime investigation, Operation "Wrong Transaction" led to the execution of 11 security measures against employees of a second-tier bank accused of embezzling more than €309,000 and $92,000 through document forgery and computer manipulation schemes.
Police further reported uncovering two document-forgery centers during Operation "Forgers," leading to four arrests. Investigators believe the forged documents, including biometric passports, were ordered by individuals from Kosovo for use in European Union countries.
During the reporting period, officers also arrested 46 individuals wanted nationally and six wanted internationally. In anti-drug cultivation efforts, police seized 3,000 cannabis seeds and destroyed 1,415 suspected cannabis plants and seedlings.
Road safety remains a key concern, with traffic police recording more than 6,200 traffic violations and 53 road accidents, including three fatal crashes.
Torba said the main challenges facing law enforcement continue to be road safety, domestic violence, citizen conflicts, and the fight against narcotics cultivation, adding that field inspections and drone surveillance operations will be further intensified across the Tirana region.
