Albania’s parliament will resume its work on Tuesday, September 8, opening the first session of the country’s 11th legislature at 5 p.m. The opening sitting is expected to be largely ceremonial.

Lawmakers will follow standard procedures marking the start of a new parliamentary session, including the approval of outstanding documents from the final sitting held in late July.

Earlier in the day, at around 11 a.m., the Conference of Chairmen is expected to meet to discuss and approve the draft parliamentary work program and calendar for the new session.

The return to parliament is expected to bring renewed political debate, with electoral reform and a proposed administrative-territorial reorganization among the key issues.

The territorial reform has already sparked protests over a government-backed draft that would merge 15 municipalities.

A protest is also expected outside parliament on Tuesday as lawmakers return. Police are expected to step up security measures after protesters called for action against MPs, including throwing eggs and tomatoes.
