Issues to Be Discussed on Kosovo Visa Liberalization; French Ambassador
The Ambassador of France in Kosovo, Olivier Guerot, said that France fully supports the liberalization of visas for the citizens of Kosovo, however he emphasized that there are some issues that are being discussed at a technical level in the EU.
"In June of this year, President Emmanuel Macron told the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, that we are in favour of visa liberalization with some follow-up measures that must be implemented. The technical discussions on the liberalization of visas are continuing and we are waiting for a positive, favourable decision", declared the French ambassador, Guerot.
On Thursday, EU member states at the meeting of the working group on visas have aligned their positions around a compromise, according to which the decision on the liberalization of visas for Kosovo would be approved, which would enter into force on November 1, 2023, when the implementation of the European travel information and authorization system (ETIAS) will start.
Guerot made these comments after a ceremony organized jointly between the German Embassy and the French Embassy in commemoration of the armistice of November 11, 1918, which ended the World War I.
Asked by journalists, the French ambassador did not comment much on what is being called the "Franco-German plan".
For this plan, which is expected to bring relations between Kosovo and Serbia closer to normalization, the European Union has said that they have received answers from both Kosovo and Serbia.
In the EU, they have said that they are analysing the answers sent by the parties.
"When it comes to concrete results, I think I can't tell you more at this stage. It is the foreseen time when it will be made public", said Guerot.
Compared to officials in Serbia, in Pristina, Government officials have more openly expressed their support for this plan. The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, and the Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, are staying in France, where they met with the French President, Emmanuel Macron. In these meetings, Ambassador Guerot said that it was discussed, among other things, about the escalation of the situation in the northern municipalities inhabited by a Serbian majority.
Guerot said that after the withdrawal of Serbs from the institutions of Kosovo, dialogue is needed to normalize the situation there.
