Work to Restore Normal Traffic Begins

The Director of the Albanian Road Authority (ARRSH), Ami Kozeli, and the Director of the Directorate of Strategic Planning and Operations, Indrit Koleci, announced on Wednesday that work has begun to stabilize the landslide on the Librazhd-Perrenjas road, especially in the area known as Arrat e Gurres.

The intervention has begun in accordance with the approved plan of measures and aims to stabilize the damaged segment of the road, as well as restore normal traffic.

Technical structures, vehicles, and workers have been engaged in the field to cope with the consequences of the landslide and to ensure the reconstruction of the riverbed.

Kozeli informed that the contractor has begun the implementation of technical measures, including covering the riverbed and demolishing the bridge that was damaged.

According to him, these interventions aim to stabilize the landslide mass and facilitate the road for the return of traffic.

“The work has been intensified, engaging 7 excavators and 20 trucks, while the geological service has brought experts who are working closely with the ARRSH to monitor and assess the situation,” said Kozeli.

For his part, Koleci stressed that currently an exact deadline for the completion of the works cannot be given, as in-depth studies are being conducted in the field to stabilize the landslide mass.

He explained that topographical studies and hydraulic modeling of the river bed have been carried out, and studies continue for the upper part of the affected area.

“We cannot determine the exact deadlines yet, as there are considerable volumes of work. However, a clearer assessment is expected within 3-4 days, and we will inform you about a preliminary deadline for the completion of the works”, added Koleci.

Meanwhile, the blocked road has created an unprecedented situation for the Albanian authorities and paralyzed the connection with the southeastern part of the country as well as with North Macedonia.

The closest alternative route, near the city of Korca, further south, can only be used by passenger cars. Traffic on the section has been obstructed by rock and soil slides, local media reported.

For heavy trucks, the only open route to North Macedonia is via the Qafe Thane border point. Incoming traffic goes through the Bllata border point, ARRSH noted.

Albanian prosecuting authorities opened an investigation into potential abuse of office and violation of rules in the tender process for awarding a contract for the maintenance of a damaged road to local construction company A. N. K., local media reported.
